The penultimate club points match of the 21/22 season was held on the GUC at Stoke Bruerne, using the pounds above and below the A508 road bridge and then below Stoke bottom lock.

With 28 anglers fishing, 10 were pegged in the pounds, this being one section, and the rest below Stoke bottom lock for two sections.

It was a cold start to the day with an overnight frost but the weather improved during the morning and the sun came out bringing clear blue skies with it.

The over night frost and previous cold nights combined with cold rain water earlier in the week proved to be the main factor in a very patchy day with many anglers blanking.

For those drawn below where the Tove flows into the canal only 4 fish were caught.

First on the day was Paul Minney with 8 Perch and 1 Skimmer from the last pound for 4 lbs 9 ozs caught on pinkie on the waggler. Second was David Rose with Perch, Skimmers and Roach from opposite the marina mouth with 4 lbs 7oz caught at 13 metres on the pole, and third was Graham Martin with 2 Bream and a few small Roach on the lead for 3lbs 9 ozs.

The first club match of the new calendar year was held on the GUC at Furnace Lane, Nether Heyford.

With 24 anglers fishing, the match length was split either side of the road bridge, 16 pegged on the right down towards the stick ups and 8 pegged to left in the boats.

It was a cold start to the day with an overnight frost but the weather improved during the morning and the sun came out for a welcome few hours.

Earlier in the week leading up to the match several hundred pounds of roach and small skimmers were stocked into the canal either side of the bridge at Furnace Lane and for those anglers drawn reasonably close to the bridge the fish hadn’t moved too far and so most of the weights came from these areas.

However for vast majority of those that were in the 16 pegs going back to the stick ups it was very tough going with 9 blanks recorded. On the flip side though for the 8 anglers drawn in the boats everyone had at least 2lb plus of roach.

Drawn on end peg 24 Andy Law had around 80 roach and small perch for 8lb 2oz which was matched by Dave Clawley also with 8lb 2oz of roach from peg 17, first peg in the boats nearest the bridge. The other side of the bridge peg 16 was Les Goodridge with 7lb 11oz of roach and third place.

Sections were won by Mick Goodridge with 7 ounces, John Broughton 2lb 12 ozs and Paul Minney 5lb 5 ozs

The final club match of the calendar year and also being the Fur & Feather was held on the GUC at Stoke Bruerne.

With 34 anglers fishing, the match length included all the pounds both above and below the A508 road bridge.

It was a cold and dismal day with the overnight fog never really lifting and with the occasional chilly breeze blowing down the cut conditions didn’t seem favourable.

However for those that were drawn on the fish that tend to shoal up at this time of year  there were many excellent weights recorded and overall the canal fished very well considering the conditions, with eight double figure weights recorded and several good back up weights as well.

Drawn in the middle of the Long Pound and 1st with 33 Skimmers and 4 roach on various baits was Simon Cordingley for a tremendous weight of 19lbs 6 ozs.

It was very close for the next three places with Ivor Stokes coming 2nd with 13lbs 13 ozs of Skimmers, Pete Laughton was 3rd with 12lb 15 ozs and 4th was Wayne Robinson with 12lbs 12 ozs.

Sections were won by John Balhatchet 10lbs 11 ozs, Kevin Elliott 10lbs 15ozs, Paul Minney 12lbs 6 ozs and Mick Goodridge 9lbs 3 ozs.

As it was the Fur & Feather there were also prizes for the top three in each section consisting of vouchers and tins of sweets.

The latest club match was held on a very out of sorts River Nene at Billing Aquadrome.

A heavy overnight cold downpour added to consistent rainfall in the previous few days had seen the river level rise, colour up and become very pacey which did not bode well for the twenty one anglers as they arrived at their pegs.

Initial fears proved to be right with bites at a premium and nine anglers failing to register a bite at all.

Of those that did catch for most it was one bite one fish, although three of these fish were bream weighing several pounds making the difference in the placings at the end of the day.

1st with one Bream for 6lbs 7ozs was Brian Beard, 2nd with a Bream and a couple of small Roach was John Broughton with 3lbs 13ozs, 3rd Andy Kimpton with a Bream for 3lb 12 ozs 8 drams.

The latest club match was held on a very out of sorts River Nene at Billing Aquadrome.

24 fished on an extremely clear and low river with very little flow and presentation was made difficult due to the number of leaves and debris coming down the river.

Bites and fish were particularly hard to come by in the early peg numbers with 10oz being the top weight in the first 8 pegs.

As the depth increased further down the match length then more bites were had and the better weights on the day were achieved.

1st with 5 pounds 1 ounce of bread punch caught Roach was Rob Pottinger, 2nd with 4 pounds 13 ounces of Perch and Roach and missing out on the Golden peg by 4 ounces was Mick Goodridge, 3rd with a few hemp Roach for 2 pounds 10 ounces was John Broughton.

Originally scheduled for the Ouse at Newton Blossomville, the latest club match was moved just down the road to Olney as overgrown bankside vegetation meant a lot of work would have been required to clear pegs and make access to the bank safe.

The match was held in the deeper sections of the Ouse at Olney just down from the rugby club in sections from Doffs to Crouches.

There were 20 anglers who fished the match and with the river lower than normal and in need of some colour this meant that throughout the sections not many Roach and Dace were caught.

First on the day with 9 pounds 8 ounces of mainly Perch was Rob Pottinger, 2nd with 9 pounds 1 ounce and again mainly Perch was John Balhatchet and 3rd with a few Skimmers and small fish for 6 pounds 7 ounces was Mick Goodridge.

Section winners were Pete Laughton 5 pounds 10 ounces, Tosh Saunders 5 pounds 15 ounces and Dave Gibbins 3 pounds 15 ounces

Brian Ayliff drew the ‘Golden Peg’ but this now rolls on to the next club match which is on the River Nene at Billing Aquadrome.

Match Details

Today the latest club match was held on the River Ouse at Olney and with the river running extremely low and clear fishing was extremely hard for most of the 21 anglers.

The match was split over 3 sections with pegs 1 – 15 at Olney Mill section of the river, these pegs were then split into 2 sections, this due to the current low level of the river and the state of bank it was not possible to get all anglers pegged one after another.

Pegs 16 – 23 were on the other side of Olney town at the Lavendon Rd stretch.

The top weights on the day all came from the Lavendon Rd section, with Rob Pottinger catching top weight of 8lb 7oz of roach and perch including 4lbs of bleak. Second was Joe Roberts wiith 7lbs 5ozs of roach, perch and skimmers on caster. Completing the frame was Mick Goodridge with 6lb 12oz of skimmers and roach.

It was more of a struggle at the Olney Mill stretch, several of the anglers being plagued by pike in their swims resulting in lost fish and impacting on overall weights.

Simon Cordingley managed a mixed bag of fish for 4lb 12oz and top weight and section winner for pegs 1 – 7.

Joint top weight and section winners for pegs 8 – 17 were John Broughton and Matt Webb both with 3lb 15oz

Section winner for pegs 16 – 23 at Lavendon Rd was Chris Howard with 5lb 13oz.
